Curriculum and Standards
I strive in my classes, 3rd grade through 6th grade, to take the state standards and turn them into a relevant need in our lives. Music is such a huge part of our world and we owe it to the world and ourselves to be as educated as we can about the subject. My goal for each elementary student is to be able to leave my classroom feeling comfortable singing along to a popular tune in a crowd, singing a lullaby to someone, being able to dance in groups and alone in different styles, and most of all teach the importance of the music underneath the technical aspects. These are just a few examples of what kids should be able to do after leaving my classroom, but by no means is that all. To read more about my philosophy, click here.
Here at Stevens Elementary, the music depart bases the curriculum that we teach off the state standards given by Minnesota. These are the guidelines for Jeannette Lund, Annie Zacho, and myself to teach every student that comes into our classroom the necessary knowledge to become tuneful, beat-ful, and artful musician. By no means is general music only for the talented, it is meant to further every student in the musical arts.
This year we have been lucky to receive a wonderful supplemental music program by John Feierabend called First Steps in Music. It comes with a wide variety of movement and singing activities along with a new way to teach and learn sight singing and solfege. You can further your knowledge of the program and of John Feieirabend at his website located below. After investing a little time in learning the curriculum myself I can tell there is a lot of valuable information and we strive to create his idea of children who are tuneful, beat-ful, and artful.
